Yoga to Prevent Osteoporosis

yoga can help prevent osteoporosis

People who practice yoga experience many benefits -- increased flexibility, mindfulness, toning, and decreased stress and anxiety. But did you know that yoga can also support bone health and prevent osteoporosis? Each time you do yoga, your balance and coordination improve, which helps protect against falls and breaking bones.

A recent research study conducted by Harvard Medical School looked at whether a series of yoga poses could increase bone density in the spine and hips. The participants practiced the yoga poses every day for two years. The study found that the poses improved bone density in the spine significantly, and although the bone density in the hips increased, the result was not a significant finding.

The health benefits of yoga are plentiful. If you have never done yoga before, now is the time to start. There are many online video tutorials you can try in the comfort of your own home. If you would prefer to have an instructor assist with posture and adaptations to any pose, look up your local yoga studio and start with a beginner’s class.
